J. Edward Shealy

Director of Bands

 

J. Edward Shealy is currently in his twenty-second year as Director of Bands at West Ashley High School.  He is a graduate of Newberry High School in Newberry, SC where he was a student of Lorraine Paris.  He earned his BA Degree in Music Education from Newberry College and has worked on his masters at the Citadel and Charleston Southern University.

 

Mr. Shealy was recognized as Middleton High School's "Teacher of the Year" in 1992 and 1998.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities at West Ashley High School, Mr. Shealy is also Fine Arts Department Chairman.  His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, Music Educators National Conference, National Band Association, American School Band Director's Association, South Carolina Band Directors' Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a past President of the Charleston County Band Directors' Association.  Mr. Shealy served as Lower State Middle School Concert Festival Chairman for ten years and is the Associate Director and Visual Coordinator for the Spirit of America National Honor Band.

Bradley D. Wingate

Assistant Director of Bands

 

Bradley D. Wingate is in his sixth year of teaching and his second year at West Ashley High School.  Mr. Wingate's prior teaching positions include the Director of Bands at Berkeley & Sedgefield Middle Schools.  He is a 1993 graduate of Chester High School in Chester, SC.  He earned his Bachelors of Music Degree from The University of South Carolina in 1997 and is currently working on his Masters in Public School Secondary Administration at the Citadel.  While at USC Mr. Wingate served as the Drum Major of the Carolina Marching Band 1995-1997.  He served as Drum Major instructor and Clinic Director for Marching Auxiliaries of America from 1994-1998.

 

The Bands of Berkeley Middle earned the first superior in the schools history under Mr. Wingate's direction his first year teaching in 1998.  Mr. Wingate's bands have consistantly earned superior ratings.  He served as clinician for the SC Region 4 Junior Concert Band in 2001.  His professional affiliations include Music Educator's National Conference, South Carolina Band Director's Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Delta Omicron, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Pi Kappa Lambda.  Mr. Wingate serves as a marching adjudicator and Drum Major instructor throughout the Southeast.
